To deliver a punchline? As wisdom for life? Or simply to show that you have read a book or two?
Joking aside: some proverbs hit the nail on the head in everyday life – provided you use them at the right moment and in the right dose. After all, nobody wants to lecture without being asked. And some of them you have simply heard too often.
My father, Karl Will, taught English and French at the Walther-Rathenau-Gymnasium in Schweinfurt from 1962 to 1992.
In retirement he collected proverbs in three languages – a small hint at this is hidden in the “tri” of this website’s name. His selection reveals a great deal about how he saw the world and life. Some of it sounds a little old-fashioned today, much of it is remarkably timeless and “smart”. There is a lot of philosophy in it. I have carefully modernised some of the German wording.
This website is a small tribute to my father and a legacy I am happy to share. Perhaps you will find a saying here or there that makes you laugh, think or disagree. Because that is what proverbs are good for, too: you don’t always have to agree with them … Enjoy!
Bonne lecture !
